What is your experience with people with disability and/or children?
Kristen grew up with a sister with Epilepsy and an Acquired Brain Injury from Grand Mal Seizers.
Kristen being the youngest of six was an Aunty by nine and now the proud Aunty of 19 including greats.
Kristen is now the Mother of four all with special requirements such as ASD, ADHD, ADD, Intellectual Disability and Anxiety.
What gave you an interest in working with people with disability?
Kristen became interested in becoming a Support Coordinator when she was assigned a Support Coordinator who did not know what they were doing, and Kristen got frustrated with someone trying to organise the children that they did not know, their needs and the family dynamics.
Do you or have you lived experience of disability or care for anyone in your family with disability? or Do you have a personal connection to disability?
Kristen grew up watching her parents daily support her sister’s needs as there was not the support as there is now. Kristen assisted greatly in the family home as a younger sibling learning how to respect, treat and assist with many disabilities.
Kristen lives 24/7 the care for the children and knows what services are helping and what engagement is needed for their needs.
Do you have any studies/qualifications (related or otherwise, current or past)?
Having been in the clinical environment for 30 years +, Kristen is aware of the needs associated with Disability Australia and needs of the person.
What are your interests outside of work/study? Could you introduce any of these to me or my child?
Kristen has a lot of interests in the community and liaising daily with new services and having used various services in the disability sector she is aware of the specialists required to support, nurture and grow the participant and their goals.
Have you had experience of (my, or my child’s extra medical, disability or behavioral support needs)?
Kristen having the experience and understanding regarding medical and disability services in the past and behavioural supports assists the participant to use the plan to its greatest capacity.
How would you communicate to us about your time with the person we love? (email/phone/text?)
Kristen understands that time is of the essence and after receiving the NDIS Plan, participants are eager to start or follow through with the funding as soon as they can. Kristen will make availability during the day to communicate the participants needs. Emails are the best communication tool and tracked for more efficiency that is kept between participant/parent/carer
What is your availability and what notice do you require?
As many Support Coordinators are brought onto the plan after the plan is confirmed and in place, Kristen is happy to look and priorities first and then delve more deeply as priorities are put in place. Kristen would like to think that priorities could be moving forward with the first couple of weeks of a contract signed.
How many hours of work are you looking for and are you willing to travel?
Support Coordination is not going to get you a detailed outcome if the funds are not there. Each participant will need at least 48 hours at the NDIS price guide to assist correctly.
Covid 19 has put restrictions on travel but within the same state is fine or Zooming online can also be an option.
Do you speak another language or Auslan?
Kristen does not speak another language but English or have experience in Auslan but will be able to assist with interpreters if required at a cost by the participant.
Our cultural/belief background is… Do you share/are you comfortable supporting our beliefs/dietary choices etc?
Kristen as a Support Coordinator is not judgemental in any way to participants cultural/belief or background. Though Kristen could refer if the participants who are wishing to have a Support Coordinators of their own cultural/belief or background.
